Hi All.   Long time player, first time poster.

I constantly have a problem keeping my docks fully employed and as a result can't get goods in and out of my cities.   When my cities go through the inevitable (for me!) down-cycle when citizens are leaving the city, I lose dock workers.   But when the immigrants come back to the city it seems as if my docks never get that all important 5th worker back.   A couple of times I've removed the dock and built a new one, but I don't want to do that when I have a lot of stock in the dock in question.

It seems as if the docks give me more trouble than most of the other issues in the game. . . . Thanks in advance for the help!

Sounds like you just need to control happiness. Main control item is housing. At least half should have a house. Once you have hovels and above, money should not be a problem so you can increase wages. Temples, schools, clinics, etc all add to happiness. Certain research also helps happiness.

Unless it's a real hard scenario (made for negative happiness), you should not have a problem loosing citizens.

Also don't forget to build 2 wonders. It makes a difference.

Trajan's Column and Obelisk have small footprints but if space is no object then any two you fancy. You just need to do the research and get hold of some stone either by import or by quarry.

Get into the habit of keeping an eye on the happiness, It's easy to forget.
Why your Dock is affected like that I don't know - sounds sort of buggy to me.

I can't recall where, but when the game was new, we posted a FAQish file with all the things to do.  Lots of food.  Plenty of temples.  AND DON'T FORGET Streetsweepers!  Romans HATE dirty streets and the happiness hit you take if you don't provide plenty of them EARLY takes forever to go away.  Go figure.

I did learn that lesson about the street cleaners in this scenario. . . if you don't place them right way it makes it nearly impossible to do it even after about 20 or so minutes of play time.

I remember trying to do trade by boat and for some reason my dock workers weren't building the boats, I had enough wood and my happiness was at 100.

Turns out I hadn't done the reaserch required, although I thought I had as I had researched the keel thingy. But I was needing to research another one.

As far as I know you don't need to research for boat builders to build the boats. I think you met a Boatyard bug, or maybe there was no road connection to the timber.
