Merry Christmas guys and gals, newbie poster here.

I`ve been playing this game for a while now and I`m completely hooked.   After some trial and error I now feel that I am able to design and maintain a thriving city.   I have completed all the ´learning`campaigns and before I tried the Constaninople scenario I thought this game was a piece of cake.

I must have tried this five or six times with different strategies but none of them have resulted in anything better than delaying the inevitable.   I have been able to reach the population objective - I ´cheated`by placing the city on the ´wrong`side of the Boshoprus strait, but there was no way I`d gain enough civilisation points with so little land to build on.

Most recently, I tried a strategy that I was certain would succeed.   At the narrowest part of the peninsula - about halfway between the edge of the map and the strait - I built a thick, thick wall with several stone towers, and put three forts behind it.   I was able to build a thriving city, get the javelin and later the sword production going and repelled the first few attacks quite easily.   Then, in order to expand the city, I moved the wall a bit further up towards the edge and moved one of the forts to this area.   However, the streams of Barbarians just kept on coming and in the end it was impossible to keep them at bay.   It was especially their archers who were creating problems for me.

I think I may have a lot to learn about military tactics - one thing that confuses me in particular is that my archers tend to go straight up to their enemies rather than standing at a distance to shoot them! I also can`t get my head around what good the gates and the stone towers do.

Have any of you been able to win the Constantinople scenario and keep the barbarians at bay?? If so, I would be very interested in reading how you did it.

Regards,

Sorry for taking so long to answer. I try to take the battles to the region map. You can win with less units.

We don't have archers, just Velites (Spearmen) and Legionaries (Swordmen). Velites should throw their spears from a distance though.

You can win without buying iron. Change the legionary in each fort to Velite and build about six javelin shops.

The first attack I only lost 5 velites. Only had 10, I was a little slow. 003

In case you don't know, Click on Change Cohort Type then click on the one you want to change at the top. The button to the left will send them to region and bring them back.

While I'm in the mood to take screen shots, you can also capture cities with only Velites. One fort for a small city, two forts for a medium city and three for a large (most of the time).

On the region map is same as in your city. That is, mouseover until pointer turns into sword and right click. If you just want to move them, just right click.

Here's a save I just created. This is where the screen shots above came from. In case you want to see how I play. Notice the region map. One city captured and the second in a few minutes.

Two more large temples will probably win, but I like to capture cities. 011

Thanks for all your help, I am amazed.  To be honest I hadn`t figured out that one could attack the enemy on the region map, that really does make a huge difference, I should think.  I am still a bit puzzled that you consider swords and swordmen unnecessary, though, as in my experience velites (whom I thought were archers, silly me) are pretty useless in man-to-man combat.  Do you use special tactics in order to avoid close contact with the enemy? I notice you don`t built stone towers from which they can shoot at the enemy.

Happy New Year, mate.

I just try not to let the enter them city. If I don't have much choice, then I'll build Legionaries (swords). As for walls, they just slow down attacks, they don't stop them.

Happy New Year to you also!

I can`t seem to get that 'Roman Army' icon on my region map, and hence right clicking on the enemy cities doesn`t do anything for me.  Anything special I need to do?

Click on the fort you want to send out. The Rectangle icon to the left will be raised. Click on it and the troops should start heading for the edge of the map.

Click on each fort and do the same. The rectangular icon "Send legions out of city" will be raised. When clicking it, it will recess (indent). Clicking it while it is indented will bring them back to fort.

Only click once.
