I'm not sure if this is a tip/trick im asking for or a mod, but here goes.

I've read somewhere on here before, but can't remember where, I want to change the green disc radius for my houses.  I want to make it bigger, much bigger. . .  so people living there would travel distances to grab meat or whatever.  Otherwise the city becomes cramped up with buildings upon buildings, unless you run an intricate series of warehouses and granaries which is like one massive migraine.

I downloaded a hack of Fileplanet, but it pretty much screwed everything up. . .  No one would upgrade their house and the green circle didn't even exist at all.

Can someone tell me how to increase this 'green zone' properly?

THANKS

You can edit (mod) the HomeRequirements.csv file to change the housing radius. On my machine the directory is { C:\Program Files\Firefly Studios\CivCity: Rome }. Make a backup first (rename the file to .bak (or whatever) or copy it to a backup directory). It is also a "read only", so you'll have to change it to an archive (right click the file, & choose Properities, then un-check the Read Only box)

There is also a unfinished (Beta) user program that works with this file;
http://www.civcityforums.com/data/content/2/42-setup.zip
Programs name is CRAM and will edit four of the csv files.

If you have Works on your machine, the MSWorks Spreadsheet will work. OpenOffice will also load & edit these files. There is an optimum radius. That is, if you make the radius too large your citizens could travel too far for commodities.

Thanks, now everything is easier.  I suppose it's like cheating but in my opinion it makes the game better.  Can you do the same thing with shops?

Commodities.csv  can be changed so they will go for commodities less. Screen shot attached. The three columns shown are figures for time ticks (how often they need to go for a commodity). Otherwise, shop's radius change with difficulty.

It's not cheating, Marcus -- you paid for the game and are entitled to play it any way you choose.

There is an alternative you might want to try: The problem comes if you try to evolve too many shacks beyond small hut.
If you place huts round a central granary and just give them meat/fish from it and piped water, they will be perfectly happy and earn you tax.

Then you only need a small area to evolve a handful of shacks, maybe 6 or even just one to Large hovel for moving to Insulae.
Insulae, Domus & Palace have much larger housing radius so you can design your high status layout for these and find somewhere to place a just a few shacks that can reach what they need. When you move them onto insulae, place more shacks in the space created, and repeat as necessary.  Maybe you place these few shacks where domus or Palace will finally go. That way your entire high status city will eventually have all Insulae, Domus and Palaces and maybe no shacks at all.
